Do Lip Fillers Hurt?

Lip Filler Wakefield – Do Lip Fillers Hurt? Your Questions Answered

If you’re considering lip filler in Wakefield, you’re probably curious — and maybe a little nervous — about what the treatment involves. One of the most common questions I get asked is, “Do lip fillers hurt?” And the honest answer is: not as much as people think.

Lip fillers have become one of the most popular non-surgical aesthetic treatments in the UK, and for good reason. When performed by an experienced medical professional using high-quality products, the results can be subtle, beautiful, and confidence-boosting.

In this post, I’ll answer some of the most frequently asked questions I get in my Wakefield clinic, from what to expect during the procedure to how to reduce swelling and look after your lips post-treatment.

Do Lip Fillers Hurt?

This is the question I hear most often in consultations — and it’s completely understandable to be concerned about pain. The truth is that discomfort varies from person to person, but lip filler treatment is usually well tolerated.

Here’s what to expect:

  • Before your treatment begins, I will apply a topical anaesthetic cream to numb the area.

  • I also use high-quality fillers that contain lidocaine (a local anaesthetic) to further minimise discomfort.

  • Most clients describe the sensation as a slight pinch or pressure, but not actual pain.

Afterwards, your lips may feel a bit tender or swollen, but this is normal and usually resolves within a couple of days. Any soreness can typically be managed with paracetamol (avoid ibuprofen or aspirin, as they may increase bruising).

What Happens After Lip Filler Treatment?

Immediately after having lip filler in Wakefield, it’s perfectly normal to experience:

  • Redness around the injection sites

  • Swelling, especially within the first 24–48 hours

  • Mild bruising, depending on your skin type and how prone you are to bruising

The “OMG Day”

I often warn clients that the day after lip filler is what we call the “OMG Day” — because swelling often peaks around 24 hours post-treatment. Your lips may look larger than expected at this point, but please don’t panic. This is completely normal and starts to settle over the next few days.

How Long Do Lip Fillers Take to Settle?

During the first week, your lips may feel a little lumpy or uneven. This is normal as the filler settles and integrates into your natural lip tissue. Some asymmetry or unevenness can occur initially, but it typically resolves by around day 10–14.

By the two-week mark, your lips will have fully settled, and you’ll be able to enjoy your final, smoothed-out result.

How to Reduce Swelling and Bruising After Lip Filler

Here are a few simple tips to help reduce post-treatment swelling and bruising:

  • Cold Compress: Gently apply a clean, cold compress to the lips for short intervals. Avoid placing ice directly on the skin.

  • Paracetamol: This can help relieve discomfort, but avoid anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen unless advised.

  • Hydrate: Drink plenty of water to support the healing process.

  • Avoid Pressure: Refrain from sleeping on your face and avoid kissing or applying makeup for at least 24 hours.

  • No Straws or Smoking: Avoid these for the first 48 hours to prevent unnecessary pressure or puckering.

  • Skip Alcohol and Exercise: For 24 hours post-treatment, steer clear of alcohol and vigorous exercise, both of which can worsen swelling and bruising.

Long-Term Lip Filler Aftercare

Once the initial healing phase has passed, there are a few ways you can look after your lips and make the most of your results:

  • Stay Hydrated: Hyaluronic acid (the ingredient in lip fillers) works best when well-hydrated.

  • Use SPF: Protect your lips with an SPF lip balm to prevent sun damage.

  • Avoid Harsh Products: Don’t exfoliate or use strong skincare products near your lips for the first week.

  • Follow-Up Appointments: A review appointment after 2–3 weeks can ensure you’re happy with the results and check if any adjustments are needed.

Can You Fly After Lip Filler?

If you’ve booked lip filler in Wakefield before a holiday, timing is key. It’s best to avoid flying for at least two weeks post-treatment. The changes in air pressure during flights can worsen swelling and may increase the risk of complications. Give your body time to fully settle before you travel.

Can I Get Lip Filler While Pregnant or Breastfeeding?

No — lip filler is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Ethical guidelines and professional standards state that treatment should always be avoided until after you’ve given birth and finished breastfeeding.

How Soon Can I Wear Makeup After Lip Filler?

You should wait at least 24 hours before applying lipstick or other makeup directly to your lips. This gives the injection sites time to begin healing and reduces the risk of infection. When you do return to wearing makeup, make sure your tools (like brushes or applicators) are clean.

When Should I Be Concerned?

While most side effects are mild and temporary, you should always seek medical advice if you experience:

  • Severe or increasing pain

  • Unusual swelling that gets worse after 3–4 days

  • Intense redness or heat

  • Signs of infection, such as pus or fever

  • Pale or blotchy skin could indicate compromised blood flow
